Piper-Heidsieck champagne supplier in the US during the prohibition
The stories of Piper-Heidsieck’s bootlegging missions to transport the Champagne House’s finest to the States via French territory, Saint Pierre and Miquelon are surprising. The cases had made the journey from Reims, France, and it was at this French port that wooden transport cases were broken, and bottles transferred to jute bags filled with salt for their journey to the US. This made disposing bottles in the sea much easier in case they were intercepted by police and subject to inspection.

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster art designer and painter. He is now often called ‘the father of modern advertising’ because of his innovation in poster design. In the 1910s, he produced an advertising poster of a woman in an orange dress, uncorking a bottle of champagne where “Piper Reims” is mentioned.

Henry Gray, whose real name was Henri Boulanger, was born in Paris in 1858. Illustrator, poster artist, draughtsman and caricaturist, Henri Gray produced advertising posters for Parisian cabarets such as “Les Folies Bergères”. In 1897, he produced an advertising poster of a woman in toga, picking grapes by hand at the edge of a forest, next to a bust engraved with the name Piper-Heidsieck.
